And here is one of the beasts.  16 cylinders, four turbochargers and 3,967 cubic inches.  This is some serious stuff.  According to the data sheet, it is capable of delivering rated power 24 hours a day.  Detroit Diesel developed this engine in conjunction with MTU in Germany. It has encompassed some slick technology in it's operation.  At unloaded idle, it will shut off the injectors to eight of the sixteen cylinders and release the compression in effect running just half the engine. It saves a ton of fuel and wear on the engine and the turbos.  To balance things out, it periodically alternates the on and off cylinders. More pictures and data on the following page.
